The Río de la Plata is the estuary formed by the Uruguay River and the Paraná River . It creates an indentation on the southeastern coastline of South America that extends 290 kilometers (180 miles) from where the rivers' join together to the Atlantic Ocean. It is the widest estuary in the world. The Rio de la Plata grows from 48 kilometers (30 miles) wide where the rivers’ meet and 220 kilometers (137 miles) wide where it opens into the Atlantic Ocean (Rio de la Plata). It outlines part of the border between Argentina and Uruguay, along Buenos Aires in the southwest and Montevideo in the northeast. The basin drained by the major tributaries of the Rio de la Plata covers about one-fifth of South America (Rio de la Plata).
